We all need to look after our wellbeing and big holidays such as Christmas can require a little extra care and attention. Here are a few tips that everyone can follow at this time of year:

1. Make time for yourself. It’s easy to get caught up in the plans of family and friends but make sure you take time out for yourself. It could be reading, walking or maybe watching a film.

2. Balance your diet. It can be difficult at Christmas as we can be inclined to indulge in luxury foods. Try to maintain a balanced diet that includes protein, carbohydrates, water alongside high fat and sugar content foods.

3. Drink sensibly. Alcohol in moderation can be enjoyable but drinking excessively over Christmas can impact our physical and emotional wellbeing. Be aware of how many units you should consume.

 4. Get enough Sleep. Try to keep a regular sleep pattern over the festive period. Sometimes our routine can be affected. Maintaining good sleep can help maintain good overall wellbeing.

5. Stay active. Exercise can be great for our emotional and mental health. Try sticking to your gym routine or going on a festive walk.

6. Learn something new. An active mind allows for the development of new neural
pathways, so make it a point to stay mentally active. Try reading, do word puzzles,
listen to a podcast on a topic you are unfamiliar with, or learn a new language.

 7. Take care of your emotions. People who are stressed, anxious, depressed, sleep deprived, or exhausted tend to score poorly on cognitive function tests. Take time out
to relax deeply and tune out every day, even if it’s just for 20 minutes each time.

 8. Volunteer. This is a good way to give something back, which can help you to feel good about yourself. If the festive period is a lonely time perhaps this can help you to find company or be around people.

9. Ask for help. Christmas can increase pressure on people due to increased spending, isolation and loneliness, perhaps grieving over lost friends or family. Try to speak to a friend, family member or even Care first who are available 24/7.
